Last year, Kalypso Media acquired the rights to Pyro Studios’CommandosandPraetoriansIP. At that time, the publisher hinted that the RTS franchises were going to get both remasters and continuations. Earlier this year,Commandos 2 HD RemasterandPraetorians HD Remasterwere both officially unveiled; in fact, Yipee Entertainment’s updated version ofCommandos 2is releasing for PC, PS4, and Xbox One on January 24. If that wasn’t enough forCommandosfans, Kalypso Media revealed that a new mainline entry is currently in development for PC and next-gen platforms.

The game is still unnamed as of yet and details on it are scarce, but we do know that Kalypso Media has opened a brand new internal studio to work on it. The fledgling development team is still unnamed, though the publisher’sown websitecurrently refers to it as Kalypso Studio Frankfurt. Even though a lot of senior staff are still being recruited, Kalypso Media has found a Studio Director in Jürgen Reußwig.

He previously worked as Managing Director atCitadelsdeveloper Games Disterilly and had the following to say about attaining this new position: “At the new site we’ll be looking to develop a truly worthy successor toCommandos, designed for both PC and console platforms for simultaneous worldwide release. On a personal level, I couldn’t be prouder to be working on a true icon of strategy gaming, and I’m looking forward to receiving applications from new and experienced developers alike that share our passion for the series.”

Kalypso Media’s own Managing Director, Simon Hellwig, also commented on the creation of this new development team. “The establishment of a new studio is a clear commitment to Kalypso’s growth plans for the coming years as we looked to expand our internal and external development efforts.Commandosis a great, globally-recognized brand and we will do our utmost to meet the expectations of the worldwide gaming community. We can’t wait to get started.”

Very few PS5 or Project Scarlett have been confirmed as of now so it’s cool to hear about this newCommandosgame for next-gen consoles, even if it’s in the very early stages of development. This isn’t the only next-gen focused studio reviving an old franchise to be unveiled this week either, as 2K Games recently announced the creation of aCloud Chamber, who will be working on the next BioShock.
