Charles Spencer, the 9th Earl and younger brother of the late Princess Diana is surfacing all over the news. In October 2024, Spencer announced his romantic journey with hisRabbit Hole Detectivesco-host, Dr. Cat Jarman after getting divorced from his third wife. In the same month, Jarman filed a lawsuit against Spencer’s ex-wife claiming the misuse of private information. Well, the newbie couple has a huge 18-year age gap. While Spencer wasn’t looking for romance, it just happened organically.
Before announcing his new romance with the Norwegian archaeologist, there were many speculations about who would be Spencer’s next love interest after he revealed his separation from his third wife. The 9th Earl was previously married to Countess Karen Spencer. In June, he parted ways with her and hired the Baroness Fiona Shackleton of Belgravia, who represented King Charles during his divorce from Princess Diana.

Before going public with his new romance, Charles Spencer shared toThe Mail on Sundaythat he had called it quits with his third wife, Karen Spencer after being thirteen years into the marriage. He said,
It is immensely sad. I just want to devote myself to all my children, and to my grandchildren, and I wish Karen every happiness in the future.
However, now in a recent interview with the sameoutlet, the younger brother ofPrincess Dianagave an insight into his new relationship with Cat Jarman. Sharing details about it, he said,“So we were friends, then we were colleagues. We were fascinated by the same things. And she made me laugh. Laughter was key.”

Talking about how Jarman felt about Spencer, she told via The Mail that she got to know the 9th Earl very gradually as a friend and saw his life developing as they went by. The Norwegian archaeologist said,“I know who he is now. That is all that matters.”
Who is Cat Jarman?
Cat Jarman studied archaeology at the University of Bristol. In 2017, she received her doctorate degree. Her main focus of the research has been on the late 9th century Viking Great Army in Derbyshire, England. Jarman got interested in it after learning about it through studying a mass Viking grave site of over 300 people. Her research further helped the 2019 documentaryBritain’s Viking Graveyardand PBS’The Lost Viking Army, as per a report inPeople.
Since receiving her docorate degree, she continued with her research and archaeological work. She specializes in the Viking field but specifies on the women and Rapa Nui (Easter Island). Jarman wants to tell new stories which is why she is always on the lookout. Along with her fieldwork, the archaeologist is also an author. She came out with two books – in 2021,River Kings: A New History of the Vikings from Scandinavia to the Silk Roadsand in 2023,The Bone Chests: Unlocking the Secrets of the Anglo-Saxons.

Until she met Charles Spencer, Cat Jarman has been a single mother to her two children after separating from her husband. When she took her kids to a trip during their break, Jarman shared a few moments on her Instagram handle. She wrote along with the photos,
While their world stops for a week, mine doesn’t. Thankfully, my children are older now and need less supervision, but I still want them to enjoy their time off. I travel a lot for work but rarely get to take my children with me so this time, I sneaked in a mini-break by the sea to coincide with a meeting.

How and when did Charles Spencer and Cat Jarman meet?
Since 2023 Charles Spencer has been co-hosting his historical podcastRabbit Hole Detectiveswith Richard Coles (the author and Church of England priest) and Cat Jarman. Spencer and Jarman’s friendship gradually blossomed into love during this time. Coles and Spencer met socially in Northamptonshire, where the 9th Earl was a deputy lieutenant of the county whereas Coles was a high sheriff’s chaplain.
After Coles’ husband died, Spencer invited him to his Althorp House. At the same time, Cat Jarman came onto the scene. She was trying to find out a village on the grounds of Althorp for adocumentary on Channel 4. However, the village was never found but the three of them found each other. They began to work on their podcast and later wrote a book with the same title.

While the 60-year-old didn’t foresee a romance brewing between him and Jarman, it happened quite naturally.
There’s a massive age gap between Charles Spencer & Cat Jarman
The 42-year-old archaeologist is 18 years younger than Charles Spencer. Explaining how given the age difference, there was no possibility of romance between them, Spencer told The Mail,“The thing is, I am 18 years older than Cat and so there wasn’t even the possibility.”He continued,
I’ve never been with a much younger person. I wasn’t even thinking romance. I was at the tail end of a marriage. It just wasn’t a possibility. I’ve never tried to do a hard sell on Cat. She’s very canny, very emotionally mature. With her I don’t pretend to be anything I am not. She knows exactly who I am and who I am not.
Even though there’s an age gap, Spencer believes his relationship with Jarman is much different from his previous ones. He told in the recent interview with The Mail,“Put it this way, this is a very easy relationship to be in. Sometimes in the past I was trying to make people better or make people happier. I think I was a people pleaser. I’m much less concerned with that.”
The aristocrat further gushed about how his relationship with Jarman changed him for the better. His close friends even noticed the small changes and the progress that he made. As Spencer explained,“It’s good to be with someone who is just so…nice. I don’t want to denigrate anyone, but Cat is just completely different to anyone I’ve ever been with before.”
However, they are currently enjoying their time together and don’t want to put a ring on it just yet.
Charles Spencer’s previous marriages and children
Prior to Cat Jarman, Charles Spencer has been married thrice. His third wife, Karen Gordon is a Canadian philanthropist and the founder and CEO of Whole Child International. They had tied the knot in 2011, a year after meeting each other, and share a daughter together whose name is Charlotte Diana. Their daughter’s name was given to pay homage to Spencer’s sister, Princess Diana.
Amid the divorce, Karen is moving on but she is finding it quite a bit of a struggle. The 52-year-old wrote in a recent Instagram post,“It hasn’t been easy finding a temporary rental that can accommodate seven horses, two sheep, four cats, and a dog – but with the help of some wonderful friends, we’ve finally found one.”She further continued,
Spencer’s other former spouses were Victoria Aitken (1989-1997) and Caroline Freud (2001-2007). He has seven children in total, including Lady Kitty Eleanor Spencer, Lady Eliza Victoria Spencer, Lady Amelia Spencer, Louis Spencer, Honorable Edmund Spencer, Lady Lara Spencer and Lady Charlotte Spencer.
