His last attempt didn’t work out so well, but maybe things will be different this time around.
Jason Blundell, previously ofTreyarchand former lead directorof the long-running Zombies modeinCall of Duty, is now the director of a new first-party studio being formed within Sony’s PlayStation Studios, named Dark Outlaw Games.

He made the announcement in an interview withJeff Gerstmann(viaVGC), stating that the new company is currently “staffing up” and that there will be an announcement about their first game coming in the future.
Second Time’s The Charm?
Blundell worked for Treyarch from 2006 until 2020, and in 2021 he and fellow Call of Duty veteran Dave Anthony announced they were forming a new studio called Deviation Games, and that theywere working on a “ground-breaking new IP” for Sony.
However, whatever they were working on never ended up surfacing.Blundell left Deviation in 2022, and afterlaying off some 90 employees in 2023, the companyshut down early the next year, without even announcing whatever it was that they were developing.

But it seems like he has high hopes for this new venture, describing it as “such a privilege” and “humbling” to be part of a brand-new first-party studio for PlayStation.
“The studio is called Dark Outlaw. We’ve been working away in the shadows for a while, when we’ve got something to talk about we’ll step out into the light.”

He didn’t say much more about what they’re making or how long their current project has been in production, but if they’re still growing their staff, it’s unlikely that they’re particularly far into development. Only time will tell, though.
Rumors have been circulating about ex-Deviation devs, including Blundell himself, forming a new studio for PlayStation back in late 2023, and this is likely what they were about.
We can only wait and see what kind of games we can expect from this fledgling studio, but with a legendary industry veteran like Blundell and the full first-party weight of Sony behind them, it should hopefully turn out better than his previous attempt.
Hopefully, if nothing else, they’ll get the chance to at least announce whatever it is that they’ve got in the works.
