Before the reboot of theModern Warfarefranchise, Vladimir Makarov was well-known for his ruthless tactics as a primary antagonist of the franchise. The man single-handedly started World War 3 all because he wanted to take revenge on the Western world.

By the end of 2011’sCall of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Makarov was killed by Captain Price. With the end of the Modern Warfare series, the Makarov everyone knew was also gone. When the series was rebooted, Makarov was once again introduced in 2023’sModern Warfare III, however, the character was severely nerfed. Fans believe that the character was only brought back to attract veteran players, but it turned out to be a massive disappointment.

Every gamer back in the day let out a sigh of relief when he finally died because he single-handedly launched various attacks that initiated World War 3 and also wiped out members of Task Force 141. The character was menacing and was undoubtedly one of the main reasons behindModern Warfare 3‘s success.

When theModern Warfarefranchise was rebooted, Activision along with Sledgehammer Games planned to bring back this ruthless character. Makarov was mentioned in 2022’sCall of Duty: Modern Warfare II, creating a lot of anticipation among the fans for the third game, however, Makarov was no longer the same merciless leader who brought down many powerful countries to its knees. A post on r/CallOfDuty explained this problem in detail and fans just couldn’t agree more.

TheModern Warfare IIreboot was developed by Infinity Ward but the studio didn’t get the opportunity to work on the third game. Many believe that if Infinity Ward created the character, it would have been much better. It’s clear that Makarov was brought back for the nostalgic factor as the new Makarov was nothing like the old one.
