We’re nearing that time of the year where the first information on the upcoming fall’s release ofCall of Dutyusually starts popping up. While Activision has so far remained entirely silent about what it has in store for the franchise later this year, the first leaks of information have now started to show up.

In a new report from Eurogamer, it is said that the title of this year’s edition of the annualized franchise will beCall of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. The information came from a knownCall of Dutyleaker namedOkamiand then was verified by Eurogamer’s own sources. This also lines up withprevious reports and rumors that we’ve heardwhich have indicated that this year’s edition ofCoDwould indeed fall in theBlack Opssub-series.

As for other details about the project, the report goes on to state thatBlack Ops Cold Warwill be a sort of reset for theBlack Opsbrand and will take things back to the roots of the series in the 1960s. This is similar to how last year’s release ofCall of Duty: Modern Warfareseemed to hit the reset button on theMWseries for the future.

All in all, what’s being laid out here isn’t surprising whatsoever, but I do have to say it’s not that exciting, personally. If theCall of Dutyfranchise is just going to continue to reset their most popular iterations in the long-running series rather than try to iterate or create something new, then that’s just not very interesting at all. We’re only 10 years removed from the original release ofBlack Opsbut I guess now Activision feels the need to reboot it. WhileModern Warfare, to their credit, was actually a solid entry in the series when it released last year, it’s still pretty disappointing to see theCall of Dutyseries move into a direction that is void of anything other than reliance on past success and nostalgia.

And as far as the title goes, well, it’s just kind of clunky. Something cleaner likeCall of Duty: Cold Warlooks way nicer, but I can understand why Activision would want to stick with theBlack Opsbranding. This is all about money at the end of the day, and theBlack Opsentries in the franchise always sell quite well. At the very least, I guess it’s better thanCall of Duty: Black Ops IIII.

Anyway, chances are that we should begin hearing a whole lot of Duty: Black Ops Cold Warhere in the coming weeks and months, if I had to guess. We’ll keep you posted when Activision has more to say.

Until then,Call of Duty: Warzoneis still free to play on PC, PS4, and Xbox One and continues to beone of the most popular games in the world right now.
