Roronoa Zoro’s journey as a swordsman has been a tough one inOne Piece. Although he has been training and working hard towards his goal of becoming the Strongest Swordsman in the world, he still has a long way to go before he comes close to fulfilling his dream. AsOne Piecehas entered its final saga, Zoro doesn’t have much time left.

While he might have become one of the greatest swordsmen in theOne Pieceuniverse, there are still quite a few swordsmen who he might have to surpass, and it won’t be easy. These swordsmen are at the top of their game and hold some of the most important positions within the story. Thus, defeating them would be a big challenge for the Straw Hat’s swordsman.
And because of these swordsmen who rank above him, Zoro will have to take his training to the next level and unlock some additional abilities that will help him get even closer to his goal of becoming the Strongest Swordsman inOne Piece.

1Saint Ethanbaron V. Nusjuro
Saint Ethanbaron V. Nusjuro is one of the two swordsmen among the Five Elders, which automatically makes him a powerful enemy. As an Elder, Nusjuro holds the strongest authority within the World Government, but what makes him even more dangerous is his swordsmanship.

Nusjuro wields a Kitetsu sword, and the only Kitetsu sword left at the time was the Shodai Kitetsu. The Shodai Kitetsu is the strongest Kitetsu sword in existence and also one of the 12 Supreme Grade swords. On top of that, his Yokai form takes his abilities to the next level.
While Zoro has clashed blades with him during the Egghead Island arc, it was for a very short period of time. Thus, there was no way of finding out who was stronger, but according to theOne Piecenarrative, Nusjuro stands above Zoro, and at his current level, Zoro might face defeat against him.

2Saint Figarland Garling
The newly appointed Warrior God of Science and Defense, Figarland Garling, is a recent inclusion within theOne Piecenarrative. There is not much known about the character besides the fact that he was the Supreme Commander of the God’s Knights andhe is powerful enoughto replace Saturn.
Garling’s swordsman skills have not been put to the test much inOne Piece, thus fans know very little about him. The only time he showcases his swordsmanship is in the flashback when the Native Hunting Competition of God Valley was portrayed in theOne Piecemanga.

However, judging by his authority and his mysterious aura, it is safe to say that Garling ranks above Zoro in terms of swordsmanship. This is why if he gets in a sword battle with Garling, he is bound to lose the bout.
3Red-Haired Shanks
Shanks’ rivalry against Dracule Mihawk, the current holder of the Strongest Swordsman title, is the biggest hint at his skills as a swordsman. Shanks has been portrayed as one of the strongest characters inOne Piece, with Haki being his primary ability. However, he can very well use this ability along with his sword.
In fact, most of the attacks that Shanks has used inOne Piecehave been a combined effort of his Haki and his sword, making it a deadly combination. Plus, his status as the strongest Emperor of the Sea inOne Piece(current era) also adds to his character.

At his current level, Zoro might not be able to take down Shanks. But if Zoro keeps on growing at his current pace, he will surely reach a level that will be way above then all the characters mentioned above. And sooner or later, he will challenge Mihawk and win the title of the Strongest Swordsman inOne Piece.
