Baldur’s Gate 3 is a massive game, and you can easily miss important things. Here’s a list of everything you don’t want to miss in Act 1.

There are multiple ways to get to the Forge, and one of them is by completing the “Get Past the Rubble” side quest, which requires dealing with Hermaster Skarjall and the Deep Rothes.

Herdmaster Skarjall Location

you may find Herdmaster Skarjall as soon as you reach theGrmyforge. Climb the stairs west of the Boatyard to find theGrmyforge waypoint. Take the staircasesouth of the waypoint and turn rightto find a long pathway leading to the north. This is where you encounterStonemason Kithand three Deep Rothes lounging about.

Go past the Deep Rothes until you see threeDark Justiciarskeletonsby a small staircase. Loot the skeletons and keep going north. You’ll see an armored Duergar with two guardswhipping two Deep Rothesin front of some rubble. This is Herdmaster Skarjall.

Should You Help Herdmaster Skarjall?

Approach the Herdmaster, and a cutscene will trigger with Skarjall telling you to whip the Deep Rothe todestroy the rubble blocking the wayfurther in. If you pass aDC 15 Persuasion check, Herdmaster Skarjall will tell you that the rubble is blocking the way to theAdamantine Forge, and if you help him, he’ll give you gold as a reward. Here, you have multiple options.

If you convince the Rothe to destroy the rubble, the Duergar will immediately become hostile and attack you, claiming that theAdamatine Forgeis too valuable a prize to let someone else have it.

Alternatively, you may also decide toget the jump on Herdmaster Skarjallbefore he becomes hostile and starts the fight by starting the fight yourself first. Try toconvince the Rotheto turn on its masters to get some extra help in the fight.

This fight only involves three Duergar (Morgya, Grundril, Hermaster Skarjall) and the two Deep Rothe. No one else in the Grymforge will join the fight or become hostile if you decide to kill Skarjall and his lackeys.

After you’ve killed the Deurgar, you canask the Deep Rothes to destroy the rubblefor you as a favor. If the Rothes are dead, you may also use anybludgeoning weaponorSmokepowder Barrelsto destroy the rubble as well. A path to the Adamantine Forge will open up after the rubble is removed.
