Larian Studios is now holding a closed alpha for itsBaldur’s Gate 3’s official modding toolkit, singling out a select few modders in the community to test the tools. However, the studio has confirmed users won’t be able to create original levels and quests using the toolkit due to “technical constraints and platform-specific guidelines.”

With the commencement of the closed alpha, Larian released a community update post outlining the roadmap for the modding toolkit and what it will be capable of. The intention is to hold a closed alpha with 1,000 PC players in July, before a full release in September.

The modding toolkit will be managed through mod.io, a cross-platform mod-management service, “[mod.io] provides the necessary infrastructure to allow you to download mods on both PC and Console, manage uploaded mods, host guides, and provide a level of content moderation to keep the community safe,” the post reads.

Larian stresses that it will never disallow the use ofmods from third-party sites like Nexus, and you’ll be able to pack these mods in mod.io, allowing you to take advantage of the load order feature.

The use of the modding toolkit’s creation tools will not be available to those on consoles, but these players will still be able to download the mods created on PC. Mods that change the scripting of Baldur’s Gate 3 will not be facilitated through the official toolkit.

The forcing of conventional beauty standards on everything is tiring.

A question posed by a user on X (formerly Twitter) regarding the creation of quests and maps with the toolkit was answered by Larian.

“That is correct, due to technical constraints and platform-specific guidelines, we wouldn’t be able to facilitate the creation of new levels or quests,” the response reads.

The studio is considering providing official script API documentation and internal testing for the Script Extender to potentially ‘soft’ facilitate “unsupported mods.”

The official toolkit also won’t support NSFW mods because Baldur’s Gate 3 is a licensed product, and as such has “certain guidelines in place to ensure the integrity of the game’s universe.”
