Wizards cause a lot of problems in D&D games, so it should come as no surprise that another one is making trouble for you inBaldur’s Gate 3. Lorroakan is an arrogant wizard livingat the top of Ramazinth’s tower. His name won’t be unfamiliar if you spoke with Aradin in act one.

Lorraine is the mage that commissioned thehunt for the Nightsong. Like Katherine Thorm, he intends to put Dame Aylin in a soul cage and poach her immortality for himself. Since he’s a threat to one of your camp allies, you can’t let that stand. Bring him down.

About Lorroakan

Lorroakan, as boastful as he is,is still a high-level wizardon par with a caster of your own at this point in the game.He can cast all the same dangerous AoEs, and single target spells you’ve come to knowover the course of your journey. His staff and robe give himpotent spellcasting and resistance to saving throws imposed by spells. He’s also anevocation wizard, able to sculpt is AoEs to avoid his own allies while he attacks.

At the same time, Lorroakan siphons power fromfour elemental Myrmidons in the room. Each gives himimmunity to fire, cold, lightning, and poisonrespectively, and empowers a unique counter Elemental Retort. It deals 3d8 per myrmidon siphoned for a range of12-96 damage. It doesn’t consume a reaction for him either. It is a consequence of attacking him.

Lorroakan’s Minions

Lorroakan won’t fight you alone.He has six alliesin his room that will turn against you when their boss becomes hostile. The first is a halfling commoner with a dagger. He really shouldn’t be there. Second is a suit of animated armor armed with a bow. It’s sturdy, but nothing special.

The big four you do have to worry about are Elemental Myrmidons.They’re a step above regular elementals. They’re armed, and have access to special attacks that can burn, stun, silence and slow your party.They all have more than 100 hit points each, and Lorroakan benefits from each one so long as it’s alive.

Finding Allies

You don’t have to fight Lorroakan alone.He wants the Nightsong, and if you tell Aylin about him,she will gladly help you smite him. She’s a strong Paladin, and starts in the middle of all the enemies. Sub-ideal, but she will attract their attention. Having her along also lets you see her cast Bane in a way only she can.

Your second ally in this fight is Rolan, if he survived this long. The tiefling Wizard decides totake a stand against his cruel mentorwhen he learns the Nightsong is a person.He will provide some extra magic damage, but can be hard to keep alive, and you want him to survive. He will become the master of the tower.

A familiar face to the franchise, Viconia returns to Baldur’s Gate 3 as one of the hardest fights in the game.

Preparing for Lorroakan

Counterspell is your friend. You’re going to get some nasty magic thrown your way this fight, so being able to prevent its use willsave you from hurt. Lorroakan’s Elemental Retort is something you can counter, but you’ll need to roll for itif you’re expending a spell slot below fourth level.

Drinking some resistance elixirs will help mitigate the damage. You’re going to take elemental damage, so any of the elixirsproviding resistance to fire, cold, or lightning will work. Fire resistance helps most. Lorroakan is going to Fireball your party, best get ahead of it now.

Fighting Lorroakan

This fight is best resolved quickly.Both sides deal massive damage, and healing won’t keep up with it. You have two choices when the fight begins on how to proceed.

The first method is to target the Myrmidons before attacking Lorroakan. Elemental Retort tries to push you this way. Few characters can survive two counterattacks,but they usually survive one. The myrmidons don’t go down easy, and there are four of them. All the while you focus on them Lorroakan is going to hit you withhis highest spells back-to-backbecause he doesn’t need to worry about making them last the day.

Instead, endure the retort.Target Lorroakan. As strong as his attacks are, he’s still a wizard.His health pool is smaller than the Myrmidons and his AC is only 12. The key to defeating him is todeal as much damage with as few attacks as possible. Rogues and Paladins do this best.Afew good Smites and Sneak Attacks can down him in three or four hits, less if you crit.

Avoiding Elemental Retort

Some effect that prevents a creature from reacting can prevent the retort.Hold Person and Command: Halt can prevent the use of Elemental Retort. Knocking Lorroakanprone will also keep him from retortinguntil he gets up. Despite Slow and Daze preventing the use of reactions normally,they won’t work here.

Finishing The Fight

Lorrakan’s attacks, like himself, are meant to be big and imposing, but they lack substance beneath to keep himself alive. Once he goes down, the Myrmidons are tough, and their statuses can be a problem, butmanage them by defeating one at a time. Start with the Air Myrmidon:it can stun you.

With Lorroakan defeated, and his Myrmidons banished, it’s time to loot. Lorroakan has a few gems on his person, butyou want his staff and robe. The Despair of Athkatla is a plus two quaterstaff and boosts your spell save DC. The Shelter of Athkatla is a robe that does the same, but also grants a free casting of mirror image.Make sure you head one floor down toget Markoheshkir and the Robe of the Weave.
