Similar to otherAssassin’s Creedtitles,Shadowshas a long prologue quest that’ll take a good amount of time to complete. It focuses on teaching the player basic controls, such as combat, stealth, and more.
The main objective in the prologue ofAssassin’s Creed Shadowsis to fight through waves of enemies, stealth to waypoints, and retrieve a box with an important artifact inside.

Ubisoft isn’t too happy about this whole thing, and their advice to players is simple.

Kill the Igan Shinobi
The start ofAssassin’s Creed: Shadows' prologue is basicallya combat tutorial, teaching you all the controls. This is done through the first objective,killing all the Igan Shinobi.
All the Igan Shinobi are indicated by a blue waypoint within the fortress and on a linear path, making them very easy to spot. Combat can initially be intimidating, so we have laid out the basics for you below.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows Pre-Order Numbers Are “Solid” Claims Ubisoft
Assassin’s Creed Shadows pre-order numbers align with Assassin’s Creed Odyssey according to Ubisoft.
As you continue to attack enemies, you’ll fill up the"Adrenaline Bar.“Once this is filled, your character will get access to their abilities that are shown on the bottom right of the screen.
Whenever they’re available, activate them by holding R2/RT and then pressing the corresponding button associated with the ability.
Playing as Naoe
After killing all the Igan Warriors and watching a brief cutscene, you will take control of Naoe, where your firstobjective is to follow Nagatoon horseback.
Follow Nagato down the hill until you reach a burning village under attack by soldiers. Get off your horse and begin fighting the Ashigaru Swordsman and the game will present you with a tutorial on Vulnerable State.
With this information, go ahead anddodge the Ashigaru Swordman’s unstoppable attack(weapon highlights red) and then punish him with a Posture Attack to deal high damage.
Next, complete this combat sequence by helping Sandayu anddefeating the rest of the enemies in the area.After all the enemies are dead, a cutscene will commence and the next objective of the prologue begins.
Retrieving the Box: First Attempt
Naoe is tasked with acquiring a box that contains a top-secret artifact. Luckily, thebox has a waypointso you don’t have to search hard to find it.
On your way to the box, the game will teach youhow to sneak and tag enemiesto help youbecome a better assassin. You’ll come across a handful of enemies, so put this tutorial to good use.
Hold Square/X to go prone, which is helpful to stay hidden in shorter grass.
The game will also teach youhow to whistle (down on the D-pad), which will lure any enemies over to your location to make it easier to assassinate them unnoticed.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows Violence Censored By Japanese Ratings Board
The Japanese ratings board, CERO, has forced Assassin’s Creed Shadows to censor its violence and dismemberment system for the territory’s release.
After killing the handful of enemies, progress forward to the waypoint, where you’ll eventually reach a location toclimb up to a high branch.
Down below this branch is another enemy, so while above him,press R1/RB to jump down and assassinate him.
Now all you have to do is continue heading to the waypoint, where you will find the box inside a small cave. Unfortunately, a strange man comes in and steals the box from Naoe.
Retrieving the Box: Second Attempt
Since our first attempt at getting the box was unsuccessful, we need to follow the waypoint again to try a second time.
When you approach the waypoint’s location, you’ll reach a small fortress, where your objective becomes to"Climb the tower.”
Hold down Whistle to call your horse and reach the waypoint faster.
There are three locations within the fortress where you must search for the box, with the last location actually containing the box. The game won’t let you progress unless you search all locations.
Location #1
The best way to go about this section is toclimb the building off to the right-hand side, indicated by the red arrow in the image attached. Once you approach this building, an option touse a grapple(L1/LB) will appear.
At the top of this building, observe the area and tag enemies to get a better sense of what you’re up against. The nearest enemy is right below, next to a hail bail, so jump off and assassinate him.

Next,walk across the tightropeand continue to the other side. When you’re halfway across the rope, the game will teach you how touse Kukri, which is easily done by using L2/LT to aim and pressing R2/RT to throw. Do this on the enemy below.
On the other side of the rope, you’llreach a building with pillars sticking out.Parkour across the pillarsand then assassinate the soldier below to reach the first search location. Search the box on the ground to find out that it’s not the right one.
Location #2
After searching the first box, the game will create a new waypoint for you to head to. So, head out of the room through the door to the north andclimb the next building directly in front, and you’ll reach the roof.
At the top of the roof, look up to find the option touse your grapple hook on a branchand swing across to the other side. Next, look down and assassinate the enemy on ground level.
Lastly, head to theblue waypoint that leads inside the buildingand check the box that’s inside. Unfortunately, this box also isn’t the correct one, so we need to look elsewhere.
Location #3
Another blue waypoint appears, showing where we need to go to find the third and final location of the box.Head out the back door of the roomwhere you found the second box, andclimb up a structure that has a ramp and has a gate-like design.
Continue toward the waypoint, where you’ll find an enemy soldier watching guard, who is luckily asleep. Approach him and select the option to assassinate to easily kill him off.
Here you will be above the courtyard area and will findIdo Yoshihiro, the Onryo Samurai who stole the box from you earlier. Select the option toswing from the grapple hook above and, while in midair, press assassinateto land on Ido and kill him once and for all.
Once Ido is dead, Naoe will have the box in hand and your final objective is toflee the area. I don’t recommend staying to fight as there are way too many enemies, and you’re too underleveled at this point.
After escaping the area, a cutscene will begin and the official title screen “Assassin’s Creed: Shadows” will appear, indicating that you have officially completed the prologue of the game.
