Usually, when a new project of a big-name franchise is released, there is enough talk around it to give it the boost it needs regardless of how good or bad it may seem. For the upcoming project, things are much different.
When it was first announced, there was a sense of excitement amongst fans who wanted to see Goku in action again. Despite the initial hype, it very quickly died down as the plot was introduced. Moreover, the first look didn’t create much excitement amongst fans. While that was a struggle to overcome, tragedy struck the world. It was then that things started changing for the series.

Akira Toriyama’sdeath shook the world to the core and it wasn’t justDragon Ballfans who were affected by it. Mangakas went on hiatus, and cartels called for temporary peace. It was an endless ripple effect of those who mourned his loss. In the midst of it all layDragon Ball DAIMA.The series didn’t have much holding it together but considering how it is the mangaka’s last contribution to his series, its value increased manifolds.
While that contributed to its popularity a lot, there was another thing the mangaka did that significantly changed the way fans would have perceived the upcoming series. The latest trailer gathered an underwhelming response with many believing Toei Animation did not even have the project as a priority.

As revealed onX, the initial name for the series was completely different. In fact, it was unfortunately so basic that the chances of its success would have declined drastically had Toriyama not wanted to change it.
Dragon Ball DAIMA Got a Name Change
Dragon Ball DAIMAwas initially calledDragon Ball Magic.The name was undeniably simplistic. It seemed as if for the longest time, the latter was the finalized name for the series. The overall presence of the name was lackluster and boring even. Searching that in itself wouldn’t help create an individual environment for the series in a way the former is.
DAIMAas a name holds enough power to stand alone. The magic of the series is as a whole, it doesn’t need a stand-alone anime to prove that point. The finalized name, rather, gives out the idea that a greater evil lurks in the universe, one that Goku and his friends would have to fight against.

Toriyama’s decision to change the name may have been a saving grace for the series. A name can change a lot as it means a lot. The initially proposed series name lacked any ring to it. While how the anime would turn out is still a mystery, its name certainly helps a lot.
