James Mangold is best known for his versatile filmmaking and films spread across different genres. His latest,A Complete Unknown, is a biographical musical film, expected to earn nods from the Academy Awards. Yet, Mangold is not too keen on venturing further into the genre and has taken up a project that couldn’t be more different than this: a DC flick.
As he recently confirmed, he has been tapped by the studio to helm the upcoming film,Swamp Thing. While it is an exciting opportunity and one that comic book fans would appreciate, Mangold might be missing one thing that also eventually went amiss with one of his greatest films,Logan.

After helming and creating what is unanimously hailed as one of the best superhero films to date,Logan, this time Mangold is collaborating withJames Gunn‘s DC studios.
While he is also working onhis upcomingStar Warsmovie, Mangold confirmed toMovieWebthat he has been roped in for DC’sSwamp Thing. Stating thatit’s just a matter offindinga way on the page to say something original, Mangold revealed that he wants to make it like a standalone epic.

While they did not undo his masterpiece, there is no certainty that DC would not given howSwamp Thingfits well into Gunn’sGods and Monstersslate. Yet, Mangold wants to make it a stand-alone film, which might end up going both ways in the future.

I’ve learned a lot, whether it’s making an action film, or whether it’s making a Western and bringing those energies to a kind of superhero film or Marvel film. You not only learn things making one genre, but then you learn how to carry over lessons from that genre into another one that you might not expect.
Stated the director to MovieWeb while adding that he doesn’t want to be handcuffed by lore so much that the final product ends up being unpleasant to everyone. However, he wants to seek inspiration from the groundwork already laid and craft an original flick with elements meticulously handpicked from different genres to deliver a superhero flick unlike any other.
