Many of them are based on and inspired by real-life professional wrestlers, both Japanese and international, but since the game is not actually licensed, they appear under different names.
It gets even more impressive when we remember that this is a PlayStation 2 classic, which was recognized by theGuinness World Recordsfor the category of “most playable characters in a video game”. EVER. A truly incredible achievement.
