Video games are a great way to escape reality, and what better way to do that than by giving players powers that exceed human capability? Why walk when you can fly, or just because you don’t have a weapon, doesn’t mean you are unarmed thanks to the ability to breathe fire?

Many games will have these in the form of items or consumables, while others have them as permanent passives or something you need to charge up until you can activate it manually. Whatever the case, superpowers in games rock, and they come in all sorts of shapes and sizes for all sorts of different situations.

10Regeneration

Regeneration is a brilliant way to give a game the feeling of moving at a faster pace than normal by not having to stop and use a healing item. While in combat and on the offensive, you’re the one dealing damage, but once you get knocked back hard, things change, and you need to go on the defensive and avoid taking a second hit while your health meter climbs back up, rinse, and repeat.

This creates a very nice ebb and flow in combat, but more so, being low on health and finishing a really hard fight and watching your health creep back up to full is very satisfying.

9Moving Objects

Whether it is through the use of mental powers such as telekinesis or controlling something like water, being able to move something around while you are at a distance is one of the most useful and versatile powers to have in a video game.

There might be something you need in a fortified structure that has a slight opening between 2 bars, or you might want to pull an enemy sniper off their perch and watch them plummet to their demise. In and out of combat, this is a winner of a superpower to have at your disposal. This is also a large aspect of gamesthat use VR Headsets.

8Super Senses

Having a type of vision that surpasses anything we have naturally provides a massive tactical advantage. You may be moving from above to see all the enemies and the patrol paths they take, or you may have many enemies all around you, and having a sudden flash of red from behind your head lets you know of incoming danger from behind.

This takes you from just “being in combat” and makes you a combat genius. This is also a great power to make sure you don’t overlook any secret objects or be aware of any potential trap triggers by walking ahead too soon.

7Mind Control

Why fight a bunch of enemies alone when you’re able to have one of the enemies' friends as your backup? Changing who an enemy, or even bystander, deems friend and foe can be a great help. If someone won’t open a gate for you, you can just twirl your hand and you suddenly have the VIP treatment.

If there is a big monster and nothing else to hit, this is still useful for a couple of seconds that lets you run past them to get to where you need to be.

6Possession

You know what is better than controlling the mind of an enemy? Manually taking control of said enemy. Suddenly you’re not the character you have been this whole time and instead getting the chance of becoming some sort of monster you have faced before and been beaten down by.

you may now start dishing out those very beatings yourself, and it is such a great experience. Just like with mind control, the person not opening the gate can now be made to open that gate and walk right up to you. Then you switch back, and they are at your mercy.

5Super Travel

Move over fast travel terminals and map markers, having a power that lets you glide through the air, run at maddening speeds or break through all the walls in a game makes movement no longer a chore and instead a fun experience to traverse and take in the level designs.

Whether it is on foot or through the air, being able to suddenly move significantly faster than you have been this whole time just makes everything about traveling so refreshing and enjoyable. You may stop using fast travel just to enjoy the feeling of moving around the game world and take in all the wonders it has, and all the hard work that the developers put into making it.

4Invisibility

No stealth operation would be complete without being unseen, and this power is the very definition of being unless. When you need to maneuver through an area and just keep getting caught, this is a godsend to be able to tap into, even if it is only for a very brief moment.

You can use it to sneak past a guard or to sneak up to a guard for a stealthy takedown. Even when stealth is no longer an option and too many enemies are closing in, being able to suddenly just disappear is a great way to make your escape without being pursued.

3Teleportation

Invisibility is useful when there is someone in the way, but you know what else is useful for that, teleportation. This is also useful for many other situations such as needing to reach a location you cannot reach by normal movement.

Nothing beats just closing the gap in a burst of smoke or the screen quickly stretching to pull you up to it. This is a staple ina lot of stealth gamesand one of the best ones they can offer. This is also great for combat situations to instantly get in close to your target before they can react.

2Invincibility

This is one of the earliest ultimate abilities found in someof the earliest games, though short-lived, powers in video games. Both Mario and Sonic become straight-up immune to damage thanks to star-related power-ups and these serve as some of the most powerful power-ups in their whole arsenal.

Even semi-invincibility as seen in team shooters can be enough to send opponents running from you. However, this is also the most terrifying power an opponent can have, which is why so many bosses get it and only grant you windows where you can damage them back.

1Supercharged

Nothing in gaming is better than entering a state where you deal a significant amount of damage just by doing what you normally do. Watching a target’s health bars drop in a fraction of the time is how you make a mortal player feel like a god.

Some games will have you build up a meter to trigger it when you need it, while others need you to collect something special to activate it. Either way, once you have it, you feel a rush of power and are able to just unleash the highest rain of destruction the game allows.
